Mural Revist

Here are some pics of a mural I did for a surf shop in the South West region. The mural is over 10 years old and it has lasted surprisingly well. There used to be one further down the road but the shop changed from Surf to fashion and a painted wave was no longer required. Its still there underneath the new signage and that one also aged extremely well :)

Self Portrait

I purchased a back to school set of glitter and mettallic pens and started messing around and liked the effects, so combined with some tin foil, acrylic and oil paint I produced this self portrait onto paper. It's called Self Portrait with flower eyes, raindrops and inverted raindrops. There will be more to follow with these pens :)

The Wave

This new canvas is a 40 x 40 box canvas painting in oil and acrylic. It has a rather long title and its called : Early morning surf check, small waves, boilers could be working at low tide. Thrift outside the view. As winter is arriving I should be posting more work as my production levels shift up a gear :)

All these pictures are of views of beaches in South East Cornwall. I've used a different technique from normal and used knives and fingers. I like how they've turned out.

This Saturday 21st Novemeber the good folks at Drift magazine are having an art show above the howies shop in Bristol, Queens St. There will be a host of artists from the drift collective and I will have some of my work on display. The show starts at 11 am and goes until 6pm and after there is a party, so anyone who wants to go please just turn up on the day, it's going to be good :)

Here is a Blog Header I designed for Utopia Surfboards. The art started as a rough sketch and then I added the colours on the computer. The Utopia Surfboard factory is based in Mimizan, France, and they specialise in excellent surfboards. First Work

Here are some paintings from many years ago when I first started out. My style has got a lot looser and has ( Well I think ) more flow now. In these pictures I was still learning about paint, and colour, and mixing. I remember the paintings would take a long time and I was a stickler for putting in all the detail. Most of these came from photos in magazines, and it was only later I changed, and used sketches done on location, or photos I had taken.

Summer Pace

Here are two recent completed art pieces. The right point style wave is another painting inspired by J Bay and messed around with for many months. The wood block was found on my local beach and I thought I could make a printing block, but when I covered it in ink and printed it onto paper it looked BAD. It was fun to do though even if not sucessful. I will have to raid the archives for new posts as the weather is good and I now have a paddleboard so production at the moment is Zero.

3 more paintings from the archive. The top picture is an oil and acrylic of my local beach, Tregantle. The middle pic is made up from various photos I take for reference. The third painting is Seaton Rivermouth, another local spot, with a good righthander when the banks are working. On this day the lefts further down the beach caught my eye.

The first painting is a Picasso inspired work onto a fish. I really enjoyed painting the Triptich and if anyone is riding any of these drop me a line.

Here is a small sample of some illustrations I found on a random CD in the artroom. Like most artists I use sketch books a lot and draw when I can, especially when travelling. After a while you gather up a lot of useful scribbles and some get turned into paintings.

The bigger sunset painting is my local beach at Tregantle in South East Cornwall, and the other two rights are from various pics I take of the coastline around here.

More Rights

Here are a few more rights I painted from 2008. The first painting is a small canvas and this painting just worked right from the start. All the water drips seemed to go in perfectly first time and the colours worked. When this happens its great, but sometimes the complete opposite is in effect. and then I just have to walk away and do something else. The second piece was one of the more enjoyable paintings from last year, and even though it was changed around a lot I was pleased with the end result.

I have posted some lefts just to prove that I can paint them as well as all the rights. These paintings are of Pipeline another favourite subject for me, but unlike J Bay I have never been there. The spot has to be one of the most photographed waves on the planet so there's plenty of reference until I do get there. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

This was an old coffee table given a new lease of life with a classic J Bay scene

Merry Xmas hope you had a good one. One of my main inspirations and favourite subject matters is right hand point breaks ( being a natural footer) and the king of points has to be J Bay. I went there in 2004 and spent my time taking shots for future reference, and sketching the place, as well as surfing it. These are just some of the things I have created inspired by the place.

Quad

This is the first Quadtich I've ever painted and it runs a good length in my front room - pride of place - that is until it sells. It is based on a picture I saw of a remote right point break and its been adapted in my dripping, scratching, splattering kind of style. I originally painted it in quite muted earthy tones, and it looked fine, but after a while sat here in the studio, it got worked over by the bright colours that I always seem to come back to.

Early reward

Inspired by checking the charts and making the early. This was loosely based on a photo of the rivermouth at Seaton. Like all my paintings it can be in the loop for days, months or years depending on when I think its done. This canvas was started last winter 07. Happy winter solstice.
